Mon, Aug. 06 – What grand adventure do you wish you could go on?

I love adventure… without risk. This is why I read books. The only real danger in reading is that your world view and preconceptions may be challenged — but that is rather a good thing.

Yesterday, as I worked on another character in Wicket Lake, I realized how eager I was to return to Davon’s story. The poor boy has been through so much! If you remember from Ferry to Ohr, Davon was trying to convince Tomah, a coastal fisherman, to take him across the northern sea to the land of Ohr.

One of the best things about writing a story is finding a character or a place that suddenly comes alive. I’ve known for some time that Davon needed to get to Ohr. I’ve known that it would not be an easy journey. I have known that one of the big tells of the entire story would begin to really unfold once Davon arrived.

But there have been many unknowns for me. I didn’t really know how Davon would get there. I knew the manner in which he would arrive, but I didn’t know what that looked like. In fact, until I wrote the scene, I wasn’t entirely sure whether or not Tomah would help Davon. I knew the legendary history of the area, the world between Poly Aegros and Ohr, but I just didn’t know the landscape (or the seascape) until Davon was caught between a rock and a hard place, quite literally.

Of all the characters in Wicket Lake, Davon’s story is the one which most excites me. The journey he is on is one that cannot be undone. The decisions he has made (and will make very soon) are quite permanent.

I feel like the proverbial fly on the wall, or Davon’s shadow. I experience his adventure right alongside him. I’m humbled to be writing it, but more importantly — I’m really enjoying it. I love that I feel so close to the adventure and danger without having any real risk.

So that’s the grand adventure I choose. I can go with Davon to Ohr simply by writing his journey.
