Wed, Aug. 01 – What book did you read over and over again as a child?

Oh! There are so many books I’ve read repeatedly!

As a child, even before I could read on my own, I loved books and words. I would often crawl onto my mother’s lap and make her read to me, whether it was The Care Bear’s Book of ABC’s when I was very little to Scott O’Dell’s Island of the Blue Dolphins a few years later. I loved stories and characters and all that was wrapped up therein. And though I loved these (and several other books that I read or listened to countless times), I honestly don’t remember anything about them.

If we’re talking about something more formative, something that stayed with me, I would have to say it was Snow by Roy McKie and  P.D. Eastman. It was an appropriate book for a child growing up in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan! But more than the wonderful words themselves or the fun illustrations, the book was written in verse — and I loved it! I have often thought this was the start not only of my love of snow, but also my love of poetry. It’s really an excellent book for children of any age. In fact, a few years ago, the book became popular again and I found it on sale at a local bookstore. I bought copies for my nieces and nephews, and that Christmas, we all sat around reading Snow… and I daresay us big kids enjoyed it every bit as much as the littles!
